CyMedica rebrands knee pain band under direct-to-consumer Motive Health

CyMedica Orthopedics is taking its wearable knee pain treatment direct-to-the-consumer, relaunching its offering under the wellness brand Motive Health.

Previously requiring a prescription, the company’s FDA-cleared muscle stimulation device—the newly rechristened Motive Knee—will now be available exclusively on its website, with prices starting at $399.

Once known as CyMedica’s IntelliHab system, and then later renamed e-vive, the noninvasive Motive Knee uses a smartphone-connected brace worn around the knee and employs electrical pulses to help contract and strengthen the quadriceps muscles with the goal of taking painful pressure off the knee joint.

“Knee pain causes people to limit exercise and reduce movement, which leads to weaker quadriceps muscles and less support around the knee joint,” co-founder Struan Coleman said in the company’s announcement.

The company’s at-home approach obtained a 510(k) clearance from the FDA in 2021, for people with knee osteoarthritis, with treatment sessions designed to last about 30 minutes per day.

CyMedica previously approximated that knee osteoarthritis affects about 14 million patients in the U.S.—but now Motive Health intends to reach a larger number of people through its direct e-commerce platform, targeting the one-in-four adults it estimates currently suffer from knee pain.
